When considering underfloor heating for your home, you need not sacrifice great looks for practicality – bamboo flooring is an absolutely suitable option.
Although bamboo and hardwood flooring naturally don’t transfer heat as well as tile or stone, it is often dismissed as a choice to cover under floor heating systems. Yet, it doesn’t need to be so.
Bamboo and timber will have a slight insulating factor by comparison to stone, but it still has a good heat transfer and will warm the home effectively.
Plus, being more temperature neutral it has the added advantage of not retaining the cold underfoot like tiles when the heating system is not engaged, thus potentially saving excess use.
When manufactured with correct cross-engineering technology, bamboo has little sensitivity to temperature changes and is thus a very stable option for under floor heating.
When laying bamboo flooring over an underfloor heating system, either a special under floor heating underlay (with a low tog rating) can be used, or you can adhere the boards directly to the concrete subfloor using flexible flooring adhesive if the heating system is embedded.
Nails or screws should not be used to install the bamboo flooring in case they puncture the underfloor heating pipes.
Another consideration when installing bamboo or any hardwood over under floor heating is the level of humidity in the room.
Ideally, the humidity levels in a room with bamboo should be kept between 50 to 60 percent to limit the extent of the floor drying.
In some cases, an air humidifier could be required.
