Wood Flooring vs Bamboo Floors

Wood flooring has always been a popular option in Australian homes, not the least for the quality and style of the looks they can bring to any house.

Most home owners would love to have wood flooring (if they don't already), but there are some key reasons why many don't. Cost is obviously one reason - quality costs (there's no way to get around that...) and if your budget doesn't stretch to having wood as your flooring type, then there's not much you can do about it.

Another reason might be the environmental impact of wooden floors. With green being front of consciousness in many peoples' mind these days, the idea of having wooden floorboards could be a turn-off in some households. After all, it seems rather callous and self-indulgent to cut down all those beautiful trees just so you can have your lovely wood floor...The option of laminated flooring would be a more eco friendly solution.

Also, over the years the look of the various timbers has changed, as all the "good" timber has been used up.

A third reason for someone to not go with wooden flooring is the hardness of the flooring. Many timbers are fairly soft and easily damaged over time, whether from over-enthusiastic children & pets in the house, or just the grit and grime that gets walked into your floor and has an effect like sandpaper on it over time.

As an example, Australian Jarrah is a very hard wooden flooring type, with a Janka (Hardness) rating of 8.5 kN (Blackbutt is considered one of the hardest at 9.1 kN), but it still isn't immune to the wear and tear of life, and of course it's not a flooring that is suited to everyone's taste, depending on your house's colour scheme and furnishings, etc.

Having said all that, when a home owner is looking for a quality alternative to wood or wood laminated flooring, one choice is becoming more and more popular, and that is Bamboo wood flooring.

You might be surprised at how magnificent Bamboo looks on your floor. In our premium Bamwood range of Bamboo wood floors, we have 3 colour choices - Caramel, Honey and Chestnut, and all of them look amazing! To the eye, our premium bamboo flooring has a natural glow timber flooring can't match. And because of its unique grain, bamboo floors give homes a beautiful flow from room to room. You can browse through our Gallery photos on this site to get a feel for the beauty, quality and style it bring to a house.

In addition, if hard wearing flooring is important to you, the Bamwood range has a Hardness (Janka) rating of 14.7 kN - making it the hardest wooden flooring type on the market. It's well suited to houses with children, pets and even high heels/stilleto shoes. Perfect in kitchens in particular. By the way, in case you didn't do the maths, Bamwood is up to 70% harder than Jarrah!

On the green subject, bamboo gets ticks in ALL the boxes.

Using bamboo is an environmentally aware way of having natural flooring, as it is forest friendly, and a truly renewable resource. Hardwoods take a long time to reach maturity, which means plantations have to be large to be economical.

When considering your flooring options, keep in mind that the destruction of forests is detrimental to the well being of native animals, and significantly reduces the contribution of trees to the reduction of greenhouse gas content in the air. Bamboo grows at 30cm a day, which means it is easily managed in comparatively small plantations with a high production rate. This has the added bonus of increasing availability of bamboo. Installation is far less likely to be delayed due to lack of availability with bamboo than with hardwoods.

Bamboo Wood Flooring

Bamboozle have had many years of supplying and installing quality bamboo floors to the new home and renovation market, either conventional bamboo grain or "Bamwood" - a bamboo flooring that's 70% harder than jarrah, and gives the look and feel of conventional timber flooring.

Bamboo flooring today is mostly supplied pre-finished and stuck direct onto concrete. Furniture can be moved back after only several hours, reducing disruption for renovators.

Bamboo flooring has all the attributes of quality wooden flooring - a warm look and feel to suit the most discerning of owners, and a look that can be improved after many years of service if necessary by sanding & polishing to give a traditional finish.

As far as health and cleanliness is concerned, bamboo flooring scores high marks. Pets are disinclined to mess a floor, but it can be easily cleaned, however pets can find bamboo floors a bit slippy when rushing about!

Bamwood flooring is scratch resistant and easy to clean, many owners opting to use a steam mop occasionally; and the fixing process means that an accidental spillage of red wine is readily cleaned up, leaving no evidence!
